Hope & Heroes is partnering with the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a quarterly event series, bringing the best of New York City’s arts to our patient community. Arts in Medicine Studio Director, Nitza Danieli will offer a tour of the museum followed by responsive artmaking in a museum studio.

During the pilot event in Fall of 2023, Nitza brought a group of patients, healthcare workers and family members on a tour of the Asian Galleries at the museum, where the primary exhibition focused on themes of hope. The patients created sketches based on their feelings about the works of art they had seen that day.

Our Winter 2024 event in January featured a tour of 19th-century European galleries, Impressionist painting and modern art galleries, and focused on the reasons why artists made their artwork. Each time, patients created sketches based on their reactions, thoughts and feelings as they encountered each work of art.

Our next tour and artmaking session takes place on Sunday, April 28, 2024, from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm and is free for pediatric hematology & oncology community members, with priority given to current and past patient families. Space is limited and is first-come, first-served.

Nitza Danieli is an artist and educator with over two decades of experience working with children in the arts. In 2007, Nitza became an Artist-in-Residence at Columbia University Medical Center in the Pediatric Neurology Clinic and in the Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant, serving their outpatient clinic and inpatient setting. In 2015 she took on the role of Director of AIM, working with patients, their families and healthcare workers to bring art into the experience of treatment and care.

During her directorship, Nitza established a long-term partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, offering individual tours with families and hospital workers upon request. This quarterly event series is an expansion of this long-time work at the Met, this time bringing group tours and artmaking to strengthen our patient community network.
