There’s no question that being a Top Team in the Hope & Heroes Walk requires motivation. Raising $15,000 or more from family, friends and colleagues can be a lot of work. Dr. Julia Glade Bender, in addition to leading our Developmental Therapeutics Program, is captain of Team DVL, a perennial Top Team. Here’s why she walks, directly from her Team Page:
“Team DVL is walking again in the 6th Annual Hope & Heroes Walk on Sunday, May 17th, 2015 . Our Team Fundraising Goal for this important event is $30,000. Last year we raised over $25,000 for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation Developmental Therapeutics Program (PCFDTP). Overall 75% of children diagnosed with cancer will be cured. But that still leaves too many children for whom our standard therapies are NOT succeeding. The PCFDTP offers over 30 clinical trials of new agents and a specialized brand of care with lots of heart. In addition to being the only National Cancer Institute recognized site in the New York Tri-state area to offer clinical trials of the newest drugs to children with cancer, the PCFDTP is now delivering personalized genomics through the PIPseq initiative. Each child’s tumor is sequenced to discover the biological pathways that drive growth and metastasis. Tumors may also be implanted in a mouse avatar. The findings can be used to identify new drugs capable of shutting down tumor growth pathways which potentially can be tested in the individualized mouse model prior to reaching the patient. We hope this strategy will be more effective and less toxic. Unfortunately tomorrows’s technology requires an investment today. In order for our new program to succeed and our fundraising goals to be met, we need your help!”
Dr. Glade Bender’s clinical research work may be complex, but her fundraising secret is actually very simple. Her number one tip? “Ask everyone,” she says. “I email everyone in my contacts and ask them to donate. The worst that can happen is they say no. But if you don’t ask, you won’t get!”
Visit Team DVL to support Dr. Glade Bender’s team. You can also sign up and create your own team. Maybe you can join her in the Top Team Village!
